Description Of Mode

If any value can occur most frequently in a data set or set of observations that value is called as mode.

A distribution with a single mode (only one mode occurs) is said to be unimodal. A distribution with more than one mode (multi) is said to be bimodal, trimodal, etc., or in generally called multimodal.

Description of Mode:

If we can find the mode for the given set of observations some steps are involving in a problem.

Step 1: First find the problem.

Step 2: We can see the order of given problem.

Step 3: If it does not in the order means, we will arrange ascending or descending order.

Step 4: Then which value is frequently occurred in a given set.

Step 5: Finally that value is the mode or a solution.

A number that occurs most frequently in a set of observations are called mode. For example, the mode or mode value of {5,7,4,3,1,4,3,6,4} is 4.If a continuous random variable has probability density function f(x) is a minimum. If such a variable has a frequency curve that is approximately symmetrical and has only one mode, then

                       Mean-mode= 3(mean-mode)

Examples of Mode:

Example 1:

The number of score points in a series of football games is listed below. Which score occurred most often?

            7, 13, 16, 24, 9, 3, 16

Solution:   Sorting the scores from least to greatest, we get:

             3, 7, 9, 13, 16, 16, 24

Here all numbers are coming or occur only one time. But 16 is occurs at two times.

Answer:   The score which occurs most often is 16.

The above problem really asked us to find the mode of a set of 7 numbers.

Example 2:

Find the mode of a following data set:

8,9,4,12,2,8,6,8,4,2,8,10

Solution:

First we can arrange the above numbers in ascending or descending order.

Then we get,

2, 2,4,4,6,8,8,8,8,9,10,12

Here all numbers are occur one or two times. But 8 is occurs 4 times

So this is the mode of given set.

Answer: 8

Practice problems:

1. Find the mode of following data set:

6,5,2,3,7,6,4,2,4,2,8,9,2,5,4

Answer: 2

2. Find the mode of the following data:

10,12,11,10,14,13,15,10,18,12,10

Answer: 10

3. Find the mode of the following data set:

1,2,1,3,5,4,1,3,2,1,6,4,1

Answer: 1
