Trapezoid

In geometry, a four-sided figure with one pair of parallel sides is referred to as trapezoid. There is also some disagreement on the allowed number of parallel sides in a trapezoid. At issue is whether parallelograms, which have two pairs of parallel sides, should be counted as trapezoids. In this article we shall discus about how to find the area and perimeter of the trapezoid. Formula Used to Find the Area and Perimeter:

trapezoid

Area of trapezoid (A) = 1/2 x h x (a + b) square units

h – Height

a, b – length of two parallel sides

Perimeter of trapezoid = a + b + c + d units
Parallel Sides of a Trapezoid – Example Problems:

1. The trapezoid has height 35 cm, length of two parallel sides a=15 cm and b= 20 cm. Solve for area of the trapezoid.

Solution:

Given:

Height (h) =35 cm

Side a= 15 cm; b=20 cm

Formula:

Area of trapezoid (A) = 1/2 x h x (a + b) square units

=1/2 x 35 x (15 + 20)

=1/2 x 35 x 25

=1/2 x 500

= 875 / 2

= 437.5

Area of trapezoid (A)   = 437.5 cm2

2. The trapezoid has height 22 cm, length of two parallel sides a=12 cm and b= 20 cm. Solve for area of the trapezoid.

Solution:

Given:

Height (h) =22 cm

Side a= 12 cm; b= 20 cm

Formula:

Area of trapezoid (A) = 1/2 x h x (a + b) square units

=1/2 x 22 x (12 + 20)

=1/2 x 22 x 32

=1/2 x 704

= 704 / 2

= 352

Area of trapezoid (A)   = 352 cm2

My forthcoming post is on Calculate Molarity and functions and linear equations and inequalities will give you more understanding about Algebra.

3. The length of two unequal opposite sides are 5 cm and 6 cm. And lengths of two parallel sides are 5 cm and 12 cm. solve for the perimeter of the trapezoid.

Solution:

Given:

a = 5 cm

b = 12 cm

c = 5 cm

d = 6 cm

Formula:

Perimeter of trapezoid = a + b + c + d units

= 5 + 6 + 5 + 12

Perimeter of trapezoid = 28 units

4. The length of two unequal opposite sides are 5 cm and 8 cm. And lengths of two parallel sides are 6 cm and 11 cm. solve for the perimeter of the trapezoid.

Solution:

Given:

a = 6 cm

b = 11 cm

c = 5 cm

d = 8 cm

Formula:

Perimeter of trapezoid = a + b + c + d units

= 6 + 11 + 5 + 8

Perimeter of trapezoid = 30 units
