Question on Distance Travelled and Time Taken

Topic : Distance and Time

Question : Two people Alex and Taylor walking towards each other from opposite sides meet at a point, Alex walks 40m and Taylor can walk 54m in 1.25 hr less than the time taken by Alex. Calculate time taken by both of them to travel.
Solution :

As they meet at a certain point,
The distance traveled is same
Distance traveled by Alex= 40t, t hrs being the time taken by Alex

Distance traveled by Taylor is
54(t –1 hr 15 min)(75 min = 1 hr 15 min)
=54(t – 1.25 hr)

So we have,
40t = 54(t – 1.25)
40t = 54t – 67.5
-54t = -54t
----------------------------------
-14t = -67.5
Dividing by -14
t = 4.82 hrs

So time taken by Alex is 4.82 hrs
And by Taylor is 4.82 -1.25 hrs = 3.57 hrs = 3 hrs 34 min
