Importance Sampling


Introduction to sampling:

In the world of generalization sampling has got immense of role to play. Sampling is coming under the branch of science called statistics. Even if its from statistics, the use of sampling is very vast and important. It is used in all fields of life.

I like to share this Sampling Variance with you all through my article.

Sampling is an important aspect of data collection. Sampling is a  random selection of individuals from a population under study. Sampling is the only method used in a situation where the population is very large in number or infinite. In sampling information is collected from only a representative part of the population. So its importance lies in fact  that, it is less expensive and less time consuming as well. And also man power needed will be also less. More sophisticated instruments and statistical principles can be used if needed, for collecting data. If destructive tests are involved then sampling can be adopted. For example the study of the toxicity of poisonous chemicals on a particular breed of animals can be done by sampling. Here considering all the animals is not acceptable. Testing blood of a human being is also another example. Importance of sampling comes for all such cases.

Sampling is used in all fields like economics, agriculture, medicine, biotechnology, microbiology, physics.

Methods of Sampling

Lets see some important methods of sampling and situations in which it is used

1 Random sampling: In this sample is taken on random basis. For example to assess the corrosion in main power supply lines of various places. It is not practical to check all lines. So a random selection is done.

2. Systematic sampling: In this method we are dividing the population into different units of equal number. And choosing samples from each unit. For example For example, suppose the objective of a large organization is to obtain a random selection from the 800 employees to sit as representatives on a management productivity group. Each has an employee staff identification number issued randomly by Personnel Department. To collect a sample of 20 names, management could take, for example every 40th name from the staff register (i.e. 800 divided by 20 equals 40, hence every 40th name)

3. Stratified sampling: In this method we divide the population into homogeneous groups then takes samples from each. For example , for checking the death rate we divide the population into child, young, middle aged and elder. And taking samples from each unit systematically
