Wells who talks of atomic bombs in The World Set Free that the idea of a source of massive energy for motive power or weapons featured. Roosevelt, saying that based on research work in France and the USA there was a possibility of setting up a nuclear chain reaction in a large mass of uranium. This led to increased research on the construction of an extremely powerful bomb of a new type. A single bomb of this type, carried by boat and exploded in a port, might be powerful enough to destroy the whole port, together with some of the adjoining territory. However, such bombs might very well prove too heavy for fighter air crafts to carry. Though Einstein proved to be wrong on the last point, six years and four days later the city of Hiroshima was devastated by the first ever atom bomb dropped by the US Air force. The bomb was the result of the Manhattan Project.
